Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP) Calculator
An SWP allows you to withdraw a fixed amount from your mutual fund investment at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly, or yearly). It is highly beneficial for generating a regular secondary income, particularly during retirement.
How does an SWP work?
When you start an SWP, units from your mutual fund are sold at the prevailing Net Asset Value (NAV) to meet your withdrawal amount. The remaining units continue to grow. If the return rate of the fund is higher than your withdrawal rate, your invested capital will actually continue to appreciate despite the regular withdrawals.
How is the final balance calculated?
The SWP calculator uses the compound interest formula adjusted for periodic withdrawals:
Balance = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) - [W * (((1 + r/n)^(nt) - 1) / (r/n))]
Where P is the principal, W is the withdrawal amount, and r is the expected return rate.
Example:
Suppose you invest โน5,00,000 in a mutual fund with an expected annual return of 8%. You opt for a monthly withdrawal of โน5,000 for 5 years.
Over 5 years, you will withdraw a total of โน3,00,000 (โน5000 x 60 months).
Because your remaining balance continues to earn 8% interest, your final balance at the end of 5 years will be approximately โน3,04,000.
